Cause for Concern in South and Latin America, Carribean and Florida

Deforestation for agriculture and ranching, mining, and road building all pose major threats to this region. Other threats include introduced species, small-scale logging, wildlife exploitation, and hydroelectric projects. Increased colonization of the area will be of great concern in the near future and will bring more hunting pressure. Uncontrolled tourism is a subject of current debate, though the long-term effects are not yet known.

Human activities such as logging, cattle-ranching, and gold-mining all degrade and pollute this fragile flooded habitat. Few protected areas exist in this region, leaving it even more vulnerable to these pressures.

Ongoing human activities continue to degrade these diverse forests. Increased colonization and human settlement result in overhunting, plantation agriculture, and deforestation for subsistence, agriculture, cattle ranching, and timber. Roads constructed for oil and gas prospecting also lead to continued colonization. And wildlife trade poses a threat, too.

Due to the inaccessibility of this region, the forest remains largely intact. People living in settlements along the rivers practice small-scale agriculture. However, boat traffic brings loggers and merchants into the region--and with them come problems associated with the hunting of large mammals, plant collecting (especially palm nuts and Brazil nuts), and human-induced fires.

A number of fishing villages dot the coastline and tourism has only recently begun to take hold in this relatively unpopulated area. The majority of human impact occurs along the river banks and other areas of colonization, although the landscape here remains relatively pristine.

Lower elevations have suffered major habitat loss due to logging, human settlement, agriculture, and grazing. Threats are reduced at higher elevations, which are less accessible. However, these areas are also under pressure as human settlements move closer. Hunting is also a major problem, especially for larger mammals and those that are attractive to the pet trade.

While some larger forest blocks still remain, the Oaxacan Montane Forests ecoregion nevertheless suffers from human disturbance. Agriculture, cattle grazing, logging and the exploitation of other forest resources take a toll. Large fields of beans and corn have irreparably replaced forest cover. Many plant and animal species may have already gone extinct, and no protected areas yet exist.

The main threats to this ecoregion include timber extraction, impacts from the construction of Volcn Dam, agriculture, and the associated construction of drainage canals in the upper delta plain.

The moist forests of Pantanos de Centla have been gradually eliminated over the years due to their importance as a source of food and timber for local villagers. Local fisheries, deforestation for agricultural purposes and cattle grazing, and industrial pollution are currently the major threats to this habitat.

The inaccessibility of this area has so far helped maintain its health. But threats are becoming more serious, as oil-drilling operations enter the area and rice fields continue to expand into this swamp forest ecoregion. The hunting, poaching, and collecting of certain species here are also causes for concern.
