Tundra
Cherskii-Kolyma mountain tundra
This ecoregion lacks large centers of human population, and resource extraction is a costly endeavor. As a result, much of this ecoregion is still pristine and untouched. However, mining, logging, and poaching are potential problems.
Much of this region is proposed to be included within an international park, for which studies are now being performed. In the meantime, ship traffic through the Bering Strait and along a proposed northern transportation route could disturb and pollute natural resources. Oil and gas exploration are potential threats as well. On a larger scale, climate change--or global warming--could alter ice habitats.
Ecotourism, fishing, and big game hunting are increasingly popular activities, and therefore of growing concern to this ecoregions biodiversity. Mining threatens certain protected areas.
